Aims of our trip to Kenya
During August a team of twelve will travel from St John’s to visit our link missionaries, Wanyeki and Mary Mahiaini. There are certain guidelines the Mahiainis themselves have given us for what we might bring in the way of skills though, in general terms, the aim of the visit is to strengthen our partnership with them; encourage them in their work, and learn from the church in Kenya how the lordship of Jesus makes its impact there. Practically, we hope to be involved with delivering sessions to pastors that promote biblical teaching. This will take place at the St Julian’s Centre in Limuru. We will then make a visit to Nakuru to do some wildlife watching and attend a local church. Finally, we will visit a children’s centre at Muranga where we will do some teaching at the local school and social outreach in the community.
Supporting Us
Alongside your prayer support we are hoping to assist some of our team memebers with some of the cost of their travel, and also pay for the wives of the pastors to join us at St Julian’s, where we will provide discipleship sessions for them. We also intend to purchase bedding for the children’s centre. If this is something you would like to contribute to, you can make gifts in one of the following ways
- Pay with cash in an envelope, clearly marked with your name and the code KENYA17
- Pay by cheque made payable to St Johns Knutsford PCC, adding the code KENYA17 to the reverse of the cheque. (Cash/cheques can be given to Paul Broomhead, or put in the collection on Sunday)
- Pay directly into the bank account 93045110 sort code 20-53-77 and include KENYA17 in the pay reference. Money can also go through the church office. If you are a Tax payer please ensure that we have an up-to-date gift aid form.
Richard: I believe it’s sharing with Christians from other backgrounds that gives us a more ample view of how great the love of God is. I very much look forward to some cross-cultural bible study, and seeing how it is that the lordship of Jesus makes its impact among Kenyan Christians.
Please pray for good relationships among the team and with our Kenyan hosts.
Myles: I grew up in Mozambique and can remember certain bits of the church there quite well. It will be great to visit another part of Africa and learn some more.
Please pray for us as we get involved at the children’s centre where I will be involved in some simple teaching and Christian devotions with the children.
Dan: I am looking forward to doing some Bible teaching and learning from the commitment of Kenyan brothers and sisters in Christ. Please pray for enough time to prepare, and also about my plans after the week at St Julians, which are quite uncertain at the moment.
Barry: As a relatively new member of the Church, I am keen to see Christians at work in a very different culture.
I would welcome prayers aimed at helping me to be a faithful representative of St Johns Knutsford.
Jon: Kenya is an exciting opportunity to share the love of Jesus, and encourage fellow Christians, whilst experiencing a completely different part of God’s creation. I’m excited to see how God’s Word is affecting this community, and how we can support them. Please pray for the second week especially, where I’ll be one of the main organisers of our time at a children’s centre.
Nick: I’m looking forward to being involved in bible study with our Kenyan brothers and sisters, to teaching maths and english at the children’s centre and to visiting Africa. Please pray for safe travel to and from Africa and safety whilst we are there and that I would be able to use my skills for God’s glory.
Beki: I’m looking forward to meeting pastors wives and supporting them, and helping at the school. Please pray that I can be used by the Lord to bring him glory.
Bill and Elaine: We are looking forward to being in a new place and understanding and knowing Jesus better through the eyes of a different culture. Pray that we would take the right kit and be medically useful and competent with different clinical problems.
Debbie: Looking forward, God willing, to seeing the team grow together and closer to the Lord as we share how we see Him at work in such a different environment. Pray for the planning stages, particularly as I prepare discipleship sessions for the women present.
Sarah: I’m super pumped to see how God’s love affects other cultures, and to experience the joy that He provides in this very different way. It would be amazing if you could please pray for my nerves, that I will be confident in anything that’s asked of me.
